Getting started

Your first yarn project

Start with something small you would like to use. A scarf or dishcloth gives you room to practice without shaping a garment.

Choose a pattern before buying supplies. It tells you the yarn, tools and techniques you will need.

Choose how you want to begin

Starting to knit

Look for a small, flat project with knit stitches. Check whether the pattern also needs purl stitches, increases or decreases.

Match your needles to the pattern and yarn. A larger needle number does not always mean a better beginner choice.

Starting to crochet

Choose a pattern with a few basic stitches. A small square lets you practice a chain, keep track of your stitches and work even edges.

Check the hook size in millimeters so you can compare tools clearly.

Choosing a kit

Read the skill level and included supplies. Some kits contain yarn and a pattern, while tools are purchased separately.

Check the techniques too. A small project can still use unfamiliar stitches.

Bring a short shopping list

  • Your pattern, including its yarn weight and total yardage.
  • The needle or hook size it calls for.
  • Any finishing tools, such as a yarn needle, scissors or stitch markers.

For a lesson, check the class supply list before buying. A smooth, light-colored yarn makes stitches easier to see.

Use the project-planning checklist for more help matching a pattern to your supplies.
